20TH ANNIVERSARY

UC PRESIDENTIAL HUMANITIES INITIATIVE

The University of California Presidential Humanities Initiative is celebrating its 20th anniversary this academic year. Founded in 1987 by then UC President David P. Gardner, the Initiative supports faculty and graduate fellowships in the humanities, ten campus humanities centers, and the system-wide UC Humanities Research Institute (UCHRI). UCHRI was established, and located at UC Irvine, under the Initiative.

Twenty years have brought considerable changes to the humanities. In keeping with such advances, and in celebration of the Initiative's 20th year, UCHRI seeks to highlight compelling UC on-campus discussions of emergent ideas in the humanities and interpretive social sciences. Events and recipients of a special grant program commemorating the Presidential Humanities Initiative are listed below.


EVENTS

Second Annual HASTAC Conference - HASTAC II
TechnoTravels/TeleMobility: HASTAC in Motion
at UC Irvine and UCLA
May 22-24, 2008

This year's theme is "techno-travels" and explores the multiple ways in which place, movement, borders, and identities are being renegotiated and remapped by new locative technologies. Featured projects will delve into mobility as a modality of knowledge and stake out new spaces for humanistic inquiry. More

Symposium on Academic Freedom at UC Irvine

The "Forum on Academic Freedom" was a day-long symposium at UC Irvine. The schedule included Cary Nelson, Robert O'Neill, Manuel N. Medical Humanities Grand Rounds at UC San Francisco:
Engaging Issues from Multiple Perspectives
Winter & Spring Terms 2008

This public lecture series at UC San Francisco will be recorded and advertised throughout the UC campuses. A humanist and a clinical researcher share the stage to offer their perspectives on themes that impact our understanding of health, disease, and health care. More

The Traveling Box at UC Berkeley:
Containers as the Global Icon of Our Era
November 8-10, 2007

The first event commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the UC President's Humanities Initiative, "The Traveling Box: Containers as the Global Icon of Our Era" was held at the UC Santa Barbara campus November 8, 9, and 10th, 2007. The Interdisciplinary Humanities Center (IHC) and the Center for Work, Labor and Democracy at UC Santa Barbara hosted the conference.
