Who Can Apply: UC graduate students working on a dissertation project in the Humanities and Medicine or in the Theoretical Social Sciences and Medicine

The Andrew Vincent White and Florence Wales White Scholarship will be awarded to one or more regularly enrolled full-time UC graduate students working in appropriate fields. To be eligible for the Andrew Vincent White and Florence Wales White Scholarship, candidates must be current full-time UC graduate students whose research involves the humanities and medicine or theoretical social sciences and medicine; advanced to candidacy by June 30, 2014, and enrolled at their home campus during the scholarship period. Preference is given to students who are more advanced in their dissertation research and writing. The scholarship, of up to $20,000, may be used for a mix of fees, living expenses, and research expenses for one academic year. The student will be based at his or her home campus; the scholarship is not a residency at UCHRI.
How to Apply
Applications are accepted exclusively online through UCHRI’s FastApps system.
Required documents include:
- Title of Dissertation and Abstract. The abstract should be a brief statement of your research, relating your dissertation work and interests in humanities and medicine or theoretical social science and medicine. (150 words max.)
- Proposal narrative. The narrative should describe your research, relating your dissertation work and interests; how they are cross-disciplinary and encompass both humanities and medicine or theoretical social science and medicine. Proposals, which could be a variation of your dissertation prospectus, should state how funding of it would help to advance your field. (2000 words max.)
- Writing sample. Up to two chapters from your dissertation (or the equivalent such as journal articles, etc.). Each chapter should not be longer than 30 pages, double spaced.
- Two letters of reference. Applicants will provide email addresses of two referees who will be automatically prompted to submit their letters online. Please note that one of the letters must be from your dissertation advisor, confirming that you are or will be ABD by June prior to the scholarship period. The letters of reference must be submitted online by the referees no later than April 9, 2014. Applicants should provide their nominated references with a copy of their proposed project.
