The University of California Humanities Research Institute (UCHRI) invites proposals for Multi-Campus Faculty Working Groups for the 2016-17 academic year.

Who Can Apply: UC Faculty. The applicants / PIs must be UC faculty members who will be responsible for the organization and execution of the proposed project.

Program Overview

UCHRI Working Groups awards provide financial resources for University of California faculty to support research collaboration and communication within the extended range of humanities disciplines. Working Groups should engage significant research questions and push the frontiers of knowledge production in the humanities or between the humanities and other fields or modes of inquiry. Working Groups should set and explore innovative research agendas in ways that contribute to the advancement of the Working Group topic specifically, and the humanities as a whole.

Working Groups are designed to catalyze collaboration between scholars from different disciplines and UC campuses around a specific problem, theme, object or topic. A Working Group may consist of 5 to 15 individuals who will collaborate over one academic year to address a clearly-defined and timely issue or the early stages of research on an emergent topic in the humanities. Members of a Working Group will be expected to be connected virtually for ongoing communication, and meet face-to-face at least two times throughout the year.

Project Description

The project description should address the Working Group’s problem statement, and the short-and long-term significance of the topic or issue to the humanities. The description should also address methods and approaches being adopted by the group to support effective collaboration.

Successful proposals will include faculty from at least two but preferably three or more UC campuses, and clearly explain how the theme and activities will contribute to research excellence in the humanities. Proposals should also explain how each Working Group member will contribute to the group’s stated aims.

The project description should also clearly state a set of deliverables, and address how the Working Group will collaborate to produce them. Examples include a scholarly publication (e.g., traditional print, digital, or film), a working prototype of a new digital tool for research or scholarly communication, or a public exhibition or performance. UCHRI particularly encourages projects that engage broader and more diverse publics in the expressive or interpretive work of the humanities; when possible the description should identify publics and campus communities with whom they plan to engage.

Working groups may also collaborate on programmatic initiatives, such as white papers, innovative curriculum development, institutional recommendations, or an organizational intervention. Working Group funding may also be used to support the development of an external grant proposal or application, including to UCHRI for a Residential Research Group.


Proposed budgets may cover travel and lodging expenses for workshop meetings of working group members as well as necessary group-related research expenses. Funding to cover partial expenses for a graduate research assistant already affiliated with the institution of one Working Group member will be considered upon demonstration that the research of the group cannot be conducted without the Graduate Research Assistant (GRA). A brief justification for the research assistant support should be included in the budget narrative. The budget must specify the estimated number of hours the Graduate Research Assistant will work.

Although not a requirement, the administrative unit (such as the department or campus humanities center) administering the grant may charge administrative costs for the funded amount, but there is a strict limit of up to 10 percent. In your budget please specify if and how these administrative costs will be budgeted. These arrangements should be worked out in advance and in writing with the administrative unit. Campuses are prohibited from charging indirect costs on funding from the Office of the President.

The lead PI will coordinate, organize and monitor the progress of the working group, and will be responsible for submitting a narrative research and budget report to UCHRI at the end of the grant period.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the respective campus representative on the UCHRI Advisory Committee for advice in developing proposals.

Optional Supplemental Graduate Student Funding:

Faculty organizers may apply coterminously for supplemental funding to support graduate student involvement in research projects (please note that this source of funding is in addition to the primary working group grant and is optional). The UCHRI Supplemental Graduate Student Funding provides financial resources to enable or augment the support of research-driven, graduate student engagement in UC-wide research projects. Applicants must submit a narrative and budget justification that speaks to how graduate student(s) will be substantively engaged in the research project. Note: Supplemental graduate student funding will only be awarded to those projects that ultimately receive a working group grant in UCHRI’s competitive grant cycle for AY 2016-17. Applicants should submit the working group grant proposal and request for supplemental graduate student funding at the same time; when submitting a proposal on FastApps, applicants must opt IN to the supplemental grant funding in order to be considered. Supplemental graduate student funding requests will receive consideration alongside the primary proposal. It is important to note that supplemental graduate student funding is not guaranteed, even if primary grant proposal amount is approved.
