The UC Humanities Research Institute (UCHRI) invites proposals for seminars to be held on the UC campuses during one quarter or one semester in the 2014-15 academic year.

The UC Humanities Research Institute invites proposals for research seminars for small groups of UC faculty and advanced graduate students to engage in intensive study of topics chosen by the participants. Seminars may be from a variety of fields in the humanities and humanistic social sciences.
Proposed seminars should draw participants from across humanistic disciplines around a clearly defined topic or from a discrete discipline to explore interdisciplinary approaches to a defined topic. Seminars should provide an opportunity for sustained engagement around a shared set of research materials or texts, broadly defined, which might include recent or innovative publications in a field, classic texts or archival material revisited, performances, exhibitions, screenings, etc. Topics and materials should encourage innovative thinking, approaches, or new directions in humanities scholarship.
Proposals should include clear goals and a preliminary schedule for the seminar that outlines the specific topics and potential readings, speakers, activities and/or field trips for each session.
In order to support sustained engagement on a focused theme, the seminars should meet regularly over the course of a single quarter or semester. Weekly or bi-weekly meetings are strongly suggested. Groups may draw participants from a single campus or from multiple but geographically adjacent campuses.
In the project description, please identify a group of five to ten scholars who may participate, and provide a brief comment as to each person’s relevance to the seminar. Tentative commitments from each scholar named in the proposal should be secured. Participation by advanced graduate students is highly encouraged but not required.
Each seminar participant will be expected to produce a brief online report for the UC humanities community about the work of the seminar and their experience. Ideally, the seminar would also produce, collectively or individually, proposals or syllabi for new courses, proposals for conference talks or panels, or smaller publications such as book reviews or articles. Seminars with the potential to lead to ongoing collaboration or funding proposals for conferences, working groups, etc. are particularly encouraged.
Past experience has demonstrated that early consultation is instrumental in developing successful proposals. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact their respective campus representative on the UCHRI Advisory Committee for advice in developing proposals.
Seminar awards generally range from $1,500 to $4,000 per proposal. Examples of typical expenses to be considered include books or other seminar materials for all participants, travel and honoraria for visiting speakers, participants’ travel and admission fees to relevant performances, exhibits, museums, etc.
In preparing budgets, please keep in mind that no more than $500 in UCHRI funds can be used towards catering.
Because of funding limitations, UCHRI is unable to support annual meetings of professional organizations and groups or ongoing scholarly gatherings.
Funding is not intended to offset or replace the costs of courses regularly offered in your department, but to result in a new research seminar.
Award recipients are required to submit a final report detailing the expenditures and the benefits derived from the seminar.

- Project Description (2000 words max.)
- Proposed Itemized Budget. Explain how estimates were arrived at. You may view a sample budget template under FAQ.
- Curriculum Vitae of the organizer (and co-organizer, if applicable) is required. (2 pages max.)
The seminar organizer must be a UC ladder rank faculty member who will be responsible for the organization and execution of the proposed seminar.
