A dystopian Los Angeles in 2019 formed the backdrop to Ridley Scott’s landmark 1982 film, Blade Runner. Defined by visions of techno-orientalism and projected futures on the one hand, and ecologies of waste and social heterogeneity on the other, in 2019 the film potentially offers us key insights into the shape of the present and fantasies of futures to come. This event will deploy the cinematic text as an occasion for reflecting on the contemporary urban condition, infrastructures of recognition and deception, and possibilities for post/human coexistence.
