Feb 23–Feb 25, 2007
Johannesburg, South Africa

The documents from the Chicago Center for Critical Theory and from the University of California Humanities Research Institute raised important and challenging questions across a very wide range of themes which, in effect, asked the participants of this workshop to think about the kind of world order that we currently inhabit. They intended to pose some questions that are focused more specifically around the relationship between contemporary capitalism and the prospects for a good life¹. They used the meeting as an opportunity to think about the conditions of a politics of hope, in this world and in these times and to do so from the vantage point of post-apartheid South Africa. Sponsored by the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research, the Chicago Center for Critical Theory, and UCHRI.
