Graduate Student Researcher, from Step 1 up to Step 3 (Step determination contingent on prior GSR experience)

Summer 2024 – Spring 2025: 50% appointment will pay full quarterly fees for academic year (excluding non-resident tuition), and monthly salary from summer 2024 through spring 2025 (for Summer 2024:  Step 1, 50% of $5,415.83; Step 2, 50% of $5,835.58; Step 3, 50% of $6,287.83) (for Fall 2024 – Spring 2025: Step 1, 50% of $5,760.75; Step 2, 50% of $6207.25; Step 3, 50% of $6,688.33)

Job description:

Position effective August 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025 for a graduate student researcher (ABD preferred) at 20 hours a week for the UC Humanities Research Institute. This position will provide research and writing assistance on climate communications, climate action, and environmental justice.  

UCHRI, located at the University of California, Irvine, is a systemwide organization serving
all 10 campuses in the UC system. The GSR will work in close collaboration with UCHRI personnel, School of Humanities partners, UC project scientists, and community groups as part of the Wildland-Urban Interface Climate Action Network (WUICAN)

Duties to include, but not limited to: supporting a Summer Institute on Climate Communications and Climate Justice for UC graduate students, August 10-18, 2024; updating the WUICAN website in dialogue with grant partners; composing climate communications (social media posts, webpages, profiles, interviews, short videos) for grant partners; interfacing with a project team that includes scientists, social scientists, humanists, and community knowledge creators; contributing to the evaluation and documentation of climate-related projects. This position may require some travel in Orange County, Riverside County, and San Diego County. 

Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge of humanistic research methodologies; some experience with applied / engaged scholarship desired.
  • Some familiarity with environmental humanities and/or climate communications is highly desirable.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, including the ability to speak beyond the academy
  • Video editing, photography, and other multimedia skills are highly desirable
  • Demonstrated interest in a wide range of humanities issues and ability to communicate and work with a diverse group of interdisciplinary humanities faculty, STEM researchers, administrators, and members of local communities.
  • Adept at problem-solving and flexible thinking, with the ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and Google Docs. Familiarity with Mac computers preferred.
  • Experience with Adobe programs and WordPress a plus.
