UC Irvine and UC Berkeley, Mona Lynch (UCI) and Jonathan Simon (UC Berkeley) invited California scholars to participate in a collaborative project that sought to examine the broader context of the prison and fiscal crisis by documenting the varied ways that California is currently governed through crime, including its impacts on diverse communities within the state. The common objective was to visualize–through the use of digital photography–how the logic of crime control shapes myriad institutions across the regions of the state, focusing on the contrasts and continuities between rural, suburban and urban settings, as well as between differently situated groups.
