This 12-month project documented Filipino-American perspectives on the Grape Strike of 1965 on the occasion of its 50th year anniversary. The strike that propelled labor leader Cesar Chavez, and the Latino agricultural workers he represented, into the national limelight was a cross-racial action, involving both Latino and Filipino agricultural laborers working together in solidarity. Through oral histories and video interviews of strike participants and supporters, and the collection and archiving of strike-related ephemera shared on a publicly accessible website, multiple social media platforms and public programs, Filipino-Americans’ important role in this key moment in labor and civil rights history was given voice.
