Speaking One’s Mind: The Critical University

May 18, 2010
UC Irvine

Panelists include: Cheryl Harris (UCLA Law), Ricardo Dominguez (UCSD, Visual Arts), Julia Harumi Mass (ACLU, Northern California), Diren Valayden (UCI, Culture & Theory), David Theo Goldberg (UCHRI)

In this panel/workshop, we will discuss the relationship of the university as an institution with its constituents—students, faculty, staff—in regard to the growing critiques and protests on our campuses about the UC’s management and its future. We will explore the ramifications of the criminalization of protest on campuses, as well as the university’s increased use of formal disciplinary power against its constituents, with little or no due process protections provided to those facing sanctions.

Sponsored by the Humanities Research Institute and the Center in Law, Society & Culture.
