I Can’t Hear the Birds

Over 7 million Venezuelans have left my country. My parents. My brothers. My closest friends. Myself. One by one, we all left. I saw my home become empty, and my memories blur, as if looking at my childhood through a foggy window.  Silence slowly took over the rooms that once belonged to my loved ones, and I traveled across the country looking for the Venezuela of those childhood memories. I found it, in the middle of solitude, struggling to survive the general decay. 

I Can’t Hear the Birds is a documentary project that chronicles the grief of our own normality as a consequence of the deepest economic crisis in our history. Mixing images of nowadays Venezuela’s rusty landscapes, the political violence from previous years, the emptiness of the houses of those who left, portraits of the resilient citizens who stay, and life happening in the middle of the decay, it aims to show the economic and social turmoil from the point of view of those who see everything changing from the inside. Whether you are a migrant or someone who decides to stay, the home we used to know is no longer there. I Can’t Hear the Birds is a dialogue between the reality around us and the constant memory of what Venezuela used to be.

The places and people photographed still hold the traces of the country that existed before the collapse, sometimes hiding in a tumultuous present. I Can’t Hear the Birds shows the silent, daily life struggles, but also that, amidst the chaos, life always finds a way.

Curatorial Commentary

I Can’t Hear the Birds is a long-term project and still in progress. Inspired by the poem titled “I must be far away” by the Venezuelan poet Eugenio Montejo, in whose first verses we can read “I must be far away / because I don’t hear the birds,” the images that articulate the narrative of this video are permeated by listening as the key of remoteness and impossibility.

Together with the voice of Fabiola Ferrero, sound and visuality testify to the tension between the desire to remember the present in its course, about a history common to a group and not just the individual history of a person or family, and the risk that this history falls into oblivion together with the spaces and objects that were previously part of the daily life of those who had to leave the country.

No Oigo los Pájaros (Español)

Más de 7 millones de venezolanos se han ido de mi país. Mis padres. Mis hermanos. Mis amigos más cercanos. Yo misma. Uno por uno, todos nos fuimos. Vi mi casa quedar vacía y mis recuerdos borrosos, como si mirara mi infancia a través de una ventana empañada. El silencio se apoderó lentamente de las habitaciones que alguna vez fueron de mis seres queridos, y recorrí el país buscando la Venezuela de aquellos recuerdos de infancia. La encontré, en medio de la soledad, luchando por sobrevivir a la decadencia general.

No Oigo los Pájaros es un proyecto documental que narra el duelo de nuestra propia normalidad como consecuencia de la crisis económica más profunda de nuestra historia. Mezclando imágenes de los paisajes oxidados de la Venezuela actual, la violencia política de años anteriores, el vacío de las casas de los que se fueron, los retratos de los ciudadanos resilientes que se quedan y la vida que transcurre en medio de la decadencia, pretende mostrar la realidad económica y agitación social desde el punto de vista de quien ve todo cambiar desde dentro. Ya seas un migrante o alguien que decide quedarse, el hogar que conocíamos ya no está. No Oigo los Pájaros es un diálogo entre la realidad que nos rodea y el recuerdo constante de lo que fue Venezuela.

Los lugares y las personas fotografiadas aún guardan las huellas del país que existía antes del colapso, a veces escondido en un presente tumultuoso. No Oigo los Pájaros muestra las luchas silenciosas de la vida cotidiana, pero también que, en medio del caos, la vida siempre encuentra un camino.

Comentario de las Curadoras

No Oigo los Pájaros es un proyecto de largo aliento y aún en proceso. Inspiradas en el poema titulado “Debo estar lejos” del poeta venezolano Eugenio Montejo, en cuyos primeros versos podemos leer “Debo estar lejos / porque no oigo los pájaros”, las imágenes que articulan la narrativa de este video están permeadas por la escucha como clave de la la lejanía y la imposibilidad.

Junto con la voz de Fabiola Ferrero, sonido y visualidad testimonian la tensión entre el deseo de hacer memoria del presente en su discurrir, sobre una historia común a un colectivo y no solo la historia individual de una persona o familia, y el riesgo de que esa historia caiga en el olvido junto con los espacios y objetos que antes formaban parte de la cotidianidad de quienes tuvieron que dejar el país.
