Measures of the Distance

Inauditas: Tracing the Sound of Migrant Memories in Venezuelan Women Photographers is an exhibition on migrant photography and photography of migration, focusing specifically on Venezuelan migration from 2016 to 2022. Each artist featured in this exhibition challenges the notion of photography that reduces it to the “visual,” while disorganizing a traditional notion of the “audible” that takes away its “auratic” effects, thus reinforcing the experience of photography as one of listening.
Measures of the Distance includes both English and Spanish text translations.
“Measures of the Distance” (English)
Conceived as a rewriting and invention of my own family history, Measures of the Distance is an archive in progress, a family album in migration, which combines digital photography, collages, poetry, and videos.
In this stage, it focuses on an emotional mapping of the relationships between my broken and (re)connected homes in three cities: my grandmother’s house, where I lived in my hometown Caracas (Venezuela); my sister’s house in Buenos Aires (Argentina); and the house where I now live in Riverside (California, USA).
This memory begins with a remission, that is, it does not begin. From remission to remission, migration is an orphan that nests outwards. It has no size, it cannot be measured with the miles between three countries or four hours the slippage of time zones; it is not contained in the borders, in canceled routes or in passports (non-renewable).
These (in)audible measures of the distance resonate in another frequency: negative spaces, a very brief friction between dream and life, the blink of the real that appears in other landscapes, 30 seconds of my mother´s voice on a tape recorder, the garden of my childhood quietly beating on the walls, the murmur of the eighty-four bodies on the shore…neither past, nor present. Neither here nor there. The trace of an a-significant rupture repeated but different and never determined. Between my fingers and my mouth, the (counter) cartographies that I invent to find the other language of this memory without destination.

Curatorial Commentary
In Measures of the Distance, Elena Cardona seeks to present the incalculable: distances that cannot be captured in words, nor enumerated in places, nor measured in miles, and that travel, from one image to another, the experience of non-place. Not being here or there, but also, as the contrast of light and shadow that runs through all the images reinforces, being here and there at the same time, forever, without being able to stop inhabiting both spaces simultaneously. The contrast between past and present resonates in each image, reminding us that photography carries the time it contains, but also that this suspension of passing time fails to capture the experience of its loss.
“Medidas de la distancia” (Español)
Concebida como reescritura e invención de mi propia historia familiar, Medidas de la distancia es un archivo en proceso, un álbum familiar en migración, que combina fotografía digital, collages, poesía y videos.
En esta etapa, se enfoca en un mapeo emocional de las relaciones entre mis hogares rotos y (re)conectados en tres ciudades: la casa de mi abuela, donde vivía en mi ciudad natal Caracas (Venezuela); la casa de mi hermana en Buenos Aires (Argentina); y la casa en la que ahora vivo en Riverside (California, EE.UU).
Esta memoria comienza con la remisión, es decir, no comienza. De remisión en remisión, migrar es una orfandad que anida hacia afuera. No tiene tamaño, no se puede medir con las millas entre tres países o el desfase entre zonas horarias; no está contenido en las fronteras, en rutas canceladas o en pasaportes (no renovables).
Mis (in)audibles medidas de la distancia resuenan en otra frecuencia: espacios negativos, un brevísimo roce entre sueño y vida, el parpadeo de lo Real que aparece en otros paisajes, 30 segundos de la voz de mi madre en una grabadora, el jardín de mi infancia latiendo en silencio, las paredes, el murmullo de los ochenta y cuatro cuerpos en la orilla. Ni pasado, ni presente. Ni aquí ni allá. La huella de una ruptura a-significante repetida pero diferente y nunca determinada. Entre mis dedos y mi boca, los (contra) mapas que invento para encontrar el otro lenguaje de esta memoria sin destino.

Comentario de las Curadoras
En Medidas de la distancia, Elena Cardona busca presentar lo incalculable: las distancias que no se dejan recoger en palabras, ni enumerar en lugares, ni medir en millas, y que recorren, de una imagen a otra, la experiencia del no-lugar. No estar ni aquí ni allá, pero también, como lo refuerza el contraste de luz y sombra que recorre a todas las imágenes, estar aquí y allá a la vez, desde siempre, sin poder dejar de habitar ambos espacios de manera simultánea. El contraste entre pasado y presente resuena en cada imagen recordándonos que la fotografía carga el tiempo que contiene, pero también, que esa suspensión del tiempo que pasa no logra atrapar la experiencia de su pérdida.
