The Tribunal Project is a research collective led by Judy Talaugon, Chumash and Filipina Land Protector from the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians. She is the daughter of farmworkers and immigrant leaders who organized in the peoples’ movement 1992 Tribunal in the Bay Area to dismantle the colonial legacy of Christopher Columbus. In collaboration with the Ethnic Studies Library at UC Berkeley and the Freedom Archives, a non-profit educational archive in Berkeley, CA, the UCHRI grant supports scholars and students of the Tribunal Project to share the historical significance of the 1992 Tribunal towards the collective reimagining of California Missions in an exhibit planned for Spring 2025 at UC Berkeley. The group is researching art materials and documents and creating a catalog publication with the Critical Perspectives on Democracy + Media in the American Hemisphere Lab.
